Modern Pod Complements Victorian Home

This home addition in Melbourne, Australia was built to complement a Victorian house. Designed by Nic Owen Architects in 2016, the 154 square meter “pod” house addition added a family room and kitchen.
The purpose of the addition was for form to follow function. Being separated from the main site meant that the pod is free to respond to the natural restraints and limitations of the site, while respecting the past.
The roof extends to provide shade from direct sunlight, but exists at such an angle that allows low winter sunlight to enter. The roof over the family room, which is set higher than the rest of the home, is able to fold down to the west to protect from harsh evening glare. The view to the backyard is still visible.
By leaving the first structure intact, the architects were able to create a less fussy, more efficient design that responded well to the surrounding environment.
